	Cabbage Patch Kids in What Will I Be? was created especially for Sarah Elizabeth Carter and Emma Lou (Cabbage Patch Kid's Name) To our wonderful granddaughter With love, Grandma Julie and Grandpa Ken Christmas 2005
Sarah Carter lives with her family and Emma Lou, her Cabbage Patch Kid, in Mobile, Alabama. She does almost everything with her 'Kid. They eat, sleep, play, read books and even share special secrets. They are the best of pals. Sarah also likes to play with Kaitlyn, Ashley and Jacob. They have a lot of fun playing together with all their Cabbage Patch Kids. One of their favorite games to play is What Will I Be when I grow up? Sarah and Emma Lou imagine all the different things they could do if they had certain jobs.
	Emma Lou started their game by asking Sarah , "If you were a doctor and I was hurt, what would you do?" Sarah hugged her and said, "When you are hurt, Emma Lou , I'll fix your hurts. When you are sick, I'll make you well with lots of Tender Loving Care." "If I were your doctor," said Emma Lou , "I would listen to your heart, look in your ears and set your broken bones. I would give you a special treat everytime you came to see me." Sarah smiled, "How nice it would be if we were doctors. We could help many people. Wow! Maybe we could discover cures for illnesses."
"Can you think of someone else who has a great job?" asked Emma Lou . "What about an artist?" said Sarah . "We would have so much fun if we were artists." "I could be a painter and pait beautiful pictures of you. You could be a sculptor and do sculptures of me while I'm painting you," grinned Sarah . "We could travel to faraway places as artists." "That would be wonderful!" exclaimed Emma Lou . "Could we stay here sometimes and do messy finger painting with Kaitlyn, Ashley and Jacob and their 'Kids?" Sarah answered, "Of course! We'll also use crayons, pencils, watercolors and chalks for some of our masterpieces."
	"A pilot also files to many fabulous places," said Sarah. "If I were a pilot, I would love to fly right through the white, puffy clouds." "If I were a pilot," squealed Emma Lou , "I would learn to do a loop-the-loop and a spin! What do you think it would be like to parachute out of a plane?" "It would be exciting, but let's just fly together," said Sarah . "I'll be the pilot, and you can be my navigator. You will study the maps and tell me where to go. We can fly biplanes, jets, helicopters or maybe a hot-air balloon. We might even fly a space shuttle!"
"Talking about space," said Emma Lou , "we could be astronauts. Imagine us flying around the earth, the moon or other planets." Sarah shouted with excitement, "We would be weightless! It would be so much fun to float in our space shuttle. Do you think we would like space food?" "Certainly!" said Emma Lou. "I like all kinds of food. We may be the first astronauts to volunteer to live in space. Let's take Kaitlyn, Ashley and Jacob and their 'Kids with us."
	"All this food talk has made me hungry," said Emma Lou . "Let's eat!" While they munched on fruit, crackers and cheese, they talked about how food is grown. "Farmers are very important," Sarah said. "We couldn't live without them." Then he grinned, "If we were farmers we could take turns driving our tractor. Hey, we could use our old clothes to make scarecrows!" Sarah , we'd have fun planting our own gardens and watching them grow," said Emma Lou . "Remember, I was born in a Cabbage Patch at Babyland General Hospital." Sarah laughed, "Maybe one day food and even little baby cabbages will be grown in outer space."
"If food is cooked in outer space," said Emma Lou , "we could be the first space chefs." Sarah laughed, "Yes, you can cook our food, and I'll eat it!" "Ha! That might be fun for you, but I have a better idea," smiled Emma Lou . "Let's just cook and eat our special recipes together." What if we were chefs on cruise ships?" askedSarah . "On cruises, people can eat all the time. Maybe one day we'll be chefs in our very own restaurant and prepare feasts for famous people."
	"Some of those famous people might be movie stars. Sarah , what would you do if you were an actor?" Emma Lou asked. "I would dress in glamorous clothes, be in movies and make zillions of dollars! You could see me on TV and read about me in magazines and newspapers. I would sign my autograph all the time," bragged Sarah . "What would you do?" "I would direct and produce all your movies," smiled Emma Lou . "Of course, Kaitlyn, Ashley, and Jacob and their 'Kids will be in our movies. We'll live together in a huge mansion!"
Emma Lou , did you know that movie stars sometimes make movies about police officers?" asked Sarah . "They do? Why?" questioned her Cabbage Patch. "Because an officer's job is so interesting and important," answered Sarah . "If I were a police officer, I would direct traffic and help people who are lost." Emma Lou excitedly said, "I would arrest all the bad guys!" "That's right! We would get to drive police cars with the lights flashing and sirens blaring," laughed Sarah . "I could talk on the police radio while you drive," called out Emma Lou . "We would help keep Kaitlyn, Ashley, and Jacob safe.
	"I know someone else who helps people," said Sarah . "See if you can guess who I am." "I play with Dalmatians and dress in a special uniform. I slide down poles and use huge hoses that spray water. I ride on big red trucks. Do you know yet?" asked Sarah . "Tell me more," begged Emma Lou . "I go to schools to show children how to stop, drop and roll if their clothes are on fire. I also teach the importance of fire drills, fire safety and smoke alarms. I put out fires and rescue people," said Sarah . "I know, I know!" shouted Emma Lou . "You're a fire fighter."
"Do you know someone else who puts out fires and also gets to take care of the forests for campers, hikers and animals?" asked Sarah . "Yes," said Emma Lou , "a forest ranger." "Oh, forest fires are so terrible," Sarah said sadly. "If I were a ranger, I'd like finding new homes for helpless,little baby animals. I wonder if that means I would do a lot of hiking?" "Probably," said Emma Lou . "If I were a forest ranger, I would help protect our earth. I would plant new trees and direct many recycling projects."
	"As teachers, we could also help children learn about recycling," saidSarah . "Yes, it's almost as important as reading, writing and math," agreed Emma Lou . "Teaching would be fun," smiled Sarah. "I would read tons of books, go on field trips and have school parties!" "If I were a teacher," said "But Emma Lou, "I would play games with my class to help them learn, probably using computers. I'd put on school plays and have spelling bees. If it's fun for my 'Kids, it will be fun for me!"
Sarah, did you know that there are also schools for clowns?" asked Emma Lou . "You're kidding! laughed Sarah in amazement. "No, I'm not," said Emma Lou. "They learn how to make people laugh and how to put on make-up." "That sounds like fun," grinned Sarah . "Think about the parades and circuses we could be in if we were clowns. I would make balloon animals." Emma Lou said, "I could be a juggler!" "It would be nice to have a job where you always make others happy just like Cabbage Patch Kids do," smiled Sarah . "We'd have so much fun being clowns with Kaitlyn, Ashley, and Jacob ."
	Emma Lou saw Kaitlyn, Ashley, and Jacob and their 'Kids at the back window. "Let's go outside and play What Will I Be, she said. "We can be ranchers and cowhands!" "I want to be a cowboy," Sarah grinned. "First, we'll round up the cattle," she laughed as she practiced with her jump rope. They used mops and brooms as their horses for barrel racing, bareback riding and bronco busting. Emma Lou surprised them all when she said, "I want to be a farrier." Sarah asked, "A what?" and smiled proudly when her 'Kid answered, "I want to shoe horses." Sarah was having so much fun that she was disappointed when Kaitlyn, Ashley, and Jacob and their 'Kids had to leave.
"I'm thirsty. Let's get something to drink," said Emma Lou . Sarah looked around the kitchen while she drank her water. "You know, Emma Lou , many things in our kitchen were created by an inventor," said Sarah . "What does an inventor do?" asked her 'Kid. "Inventors have ideas, use their imaginations and create things that didn't exist before," answered Sarah . "Inventors are clever people," continued Sarah . "They invent useful things such as airplanes, tractors and police radios. They also invent fun things like games, televisions and computers." Emma Lou shouted, "Perhaps someday we will invent something fun and useful!"
	Sarah and Emma Lou enjoyed playing together so much, they were surprised when it was time for bed. As they got ready, Sarah talked to Emma Lou . "I love playing our game of What Will I Be when I grow up? I know I can be anything I want to be," Sarah said. "I just need to go to school, study hard and read many books. I can watch other people to see what they do and decide if I really want to do that too." "Let's play this game again real soon with Kaitlyn, Ashley, and Jacob ." Sarah Carter hugged Emma Lou , turned off the light and went to sleep to dream about tomorrow with her Cabbage Patch Kid.
